Oscar 2023 | ‘Alcarràs’ will represent Spain at the Oscars

‘Alcarràs’, by Carla Simón, was chosen by the Dinner Academy represent Spain in the category of Oscar for the best international film at the 95th Hollywood Awards, to be held in Los Angeles on March 12, 2023. Simón’s award-winning film, Golden Bear at the last Berlinalehe beat the other two excellent candidates, ‘As bestas’, by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, and ‘Cinco lobitos’, by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa.

Carla Simón’s first film, “Estiu 1993”, had already been chosen in 2018 by the Spanish Academy to fight for the Oscars, although it would ultimately have been out of competition to enter the nominees. It will be there third film shot in Catalan to be nominated for an Oscarafter ‘Pa negre’, by Agustí Villaronga, in 2011, and the aforementioned ‘Estiu 1993’.

After the Mercè celebrations, of which she will be herald, Carla Simón will travel to the United States at the beginning of October to present ‘Alcarràs’ at the New York Film Festival, and it is here that the Oscar campaign for the hand of the producer and distributor Mubi.

Spain has been nominated 20 times for the Oscar for Best International Film and he has won it four times: ‘It starts again’, by José Luis Garci, in 1982; ‘Belle Epoque’, by Fernando Trueba, in 1993; ‘All About My Mother’, by Pedro Almodóvar, in 1999; and ‘Sea Inside’, by Alejandro Amenábar, in 2004. The last time the Academy opted for the award was in 2020, with Almodóvar’s ‘Pain and Glory’, which capitulated to the ‘Parasites’ phenomenon.
