Orionid Meteor Shower 2023: Spectacular Phenomenon Lights Up Indonesian Sky

Jakarta

Orionid meteor shower occurred on October 22, 2023, night until dawn in Indonesia. The phenomenon that decorated the Indonesian sky last night was a meteor shower which occurs in mid-October every year.

United States Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA said the Orionid meteor shower is called one of the most beautiful meteor showers of the year, the Orionids are famous for their brightness and speed, which is around 148,000 mph (66 km/s) into the Earth’s atmosphere.

The Orionid meteor is so fast that it leaves behind incandescent debris that shines for several seconds to minutes. Because they are fast, Orionid meteors can form fireballs which can become explosions of light.

As reported by the Instagram account Bosscha ObservatoryFriday (20/10/2023), in the astronomical calendar for October 2023 it is stated that the peak Orionid meteor shower in Indonesia occurred on Sunday, October 22 2023 at 22.14 WIB until dawn.

It is stated that the Orionid meteor shower phenomenon can be seen in the direction of the Orion constellation. The way to see it is to provide a distance of 45-90 degrees from the light from the Orion constellation to see the Orionid meteor.

What is the Orionid Meteor Shower?

Meanwhile, quoted from the Langit Selatan page, Orionid meteor shower is a meteor shower phenomenon that originates from the remaining dust from Halley’s comet. The Orionid meteor shower appears from the constellation Orion the Hunter. The Orionid meteor shower peaks in mid-late October every year.

At its peak night, the Orionid meteor shower is capable of producing as many as 25 meteors/hour at a speed of 66 km/second. The Orionid meteor shower rises at night and can be seen until just before dawn the next day. The appearance of the Orionid meteor shower is green and yellow.

Meteor Showers and Their Occurrence Process

National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN) National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), meteor shower or meteor Rain is the phenomenon of meteors falling and passing through the Earth’s surface in large numbers. So from the surface of the Earth it will look like rain is falling.

Meteor showers can briefly occur because meteoroids enter the Earth’s atmosphere at high speed. Meanwhile, meteor is a term used to refer to something (space objects) that falls from outer space.

The process of the meteor shower phenomenon begins with the presence of a rock in outer space that collides with Earth. These rocks are fragments of destroyed comets and different rocks in outer space.

The Earth’s greater gravitational force attracts the rock, so that the rock meets and rubs against the Earth’s atmosphere. The friction that occurs in the Earth’s atmosphere with rocks also causes pressure to arise on the rocks and will generate heat. One type of layer in the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere layer.

Due to the heat generated by the rock, it causes fire or burning of the rock. This is what can produce light resembling a shooting star. Because of the meteors that fall and light up, it is called a meteor shower.

It is called rain because usually there are more than one meteor that comes from burnt, charred and fallen comet debris. So it is more accurate to call it a meteor shower.

Even though meteors fall towards Earth and interact with the Earth’s atmosphere, usually these falling meteors do not reach the Earth’s surface. This is because the meteor burned up when it passed through Earth’s atmosphere. So, the meteor shower phenomenon is not dangerous.
