Orange County declares a health emergency due to cases of influenza and respiratory syncytial virus

A health emergency was declared in Orange County due to a rapidly spreading viral infection.

Regional health officials made the announcement on Monday due to the record number of pediatric hospital admissions and daily emergency room visits, the OC’s Health Care Agency said in a news release.

“In addition, a local state of emergency was declared, allowing the county to access state and federal resources to address the situation and seek mutual assistance from neighboring counties,” the statement read.

Last week, the San Diego County Public Health Agency issued a similar warning.

“Local health workers are seeing an initial increase in cases of influenza and respiratory virus (RSV) and while cases of COVID-19 are currently trending in the region, a triple attack of all three viruses circulating simultaneously could cause strains into the overloaded medical staff system, ”a San Diego County statement said.

Although there is no approved vaccine for RSV, though Pfizer has one in development —Orange County Health Officer Dr. Regina Chinseo-Kwong said children and people at risk should stay up to date on vaccinations against influenza and COVID-19, wear masks indoors, and stay home when sick.
