Opuses of the contemporary American composers will be performed at the anniversary concert of the Riga Orchestra / Day

With this anniversary opening program the Orchestra Riga and its chief conductor and artistic director, Valdis Bhutan, is once again looking toward America, where a significant portion of the current music of contemporary wind orchestras is being made.

Orchestra Riga and the successful collaboration of Scott McCalister (1969), staging a concept symphony in 2016 Mercury to the Moon, was a vivid proof of the composer ‘s ability to synthesize academic composition techniques with sources of inspiration in the genre of non – academic music. This time the orchestra will perform a rhapsody for clarinet and wind orchestra together with the winners of the Grand Music Prize, clarinetists Anna Gaganis Black Dog, inspired by S. McAllister in heavy metal music.

Steven Brian (1972) is one of the most prolific and experimental composers of the new American generation. The symphonically ambitious five-part opus included in the concert program Pendulum he described it as a mental pendulum swinging between jubilant cries and introspective reflections.

The world-famous American composer Dana Wilson (1946), also a masterful jazz pianist, realized her dream of writing a concert for jazz piano in 2018. For concert jazz piano and wind orchestra Lithuanian jazz pianist Dmitrijs Golovanovs will play the role of soloist at the VEF Culture Palace. The piano master of the neighboring countries is characterized by excellent knowledge of the language of jazz music, as well as a refined and expressive style of playing.

“In response to the war in Ukraine, together with the State Academic Choir Latvia The management decided not to include the composition of the composer Eriks Viteks in the concert Godzilla eats Las Vegas !. It was originally intended as an effective closing work for the concert (the fourth American story), in which we laugh instrumentally brilliantly and with a great deal of humor at an imaginary cinema monster who arrived in Las Vegas and thoroughly frightened the people of the city. In a situation when a very real monster in the form of the Russian army is raging in Ukraine, we want to replace this opus full of life with compositions, including from Erik Vitekra’s work, which more expresses the current reality and our true feelings in support of the Ukrainian people, “says conductor Valdis Butāns.

Tickets for the concert are available online Ticket paradise. The second Orchestra is also expected on April 20 Riga anniversary opening concert The sun will shine today, for which the jazz music program is composed by conductor Raitis Ašmanis. As usual, in the continuation of this season, the orchestra will invite listeners to concerts on holidays and remembrance days important for the country. In the autumn, on September 3, an orchestra will perform at the concert Riga New works by Latvian composers have been created for the 50th anniversary. More information at: orkestris.riga.lv
