With this anniversary opening program the Orchestra Riga and its chief conductor and artistic director, Valdis Bhutan, is once again looking toward America, where a significant portion of the current music of contemporary wind orchestras is being made.
Orchestra Riga and the successful collaboration of Scott McCalister (1969), staging a concept symphony in 2016 Mercury to the Moon, was a vivid proof of the composer ‘s ability to synthesize academic composition techniques with sources of inspiration in the genre of non – academic music. This time the orchestra will perform a rhapsody for clarinet and wind orchestra together with the winners of the Grand Music Prize, clarinetists Anna Gaganis Black Dog, inspired by S. McAllister in heavy metal music.
Steven Brian (1972) is one of the most prolific and experimental composers of the new American generation. The symphonically ambitious five-part opus included in the concert program Pendulum he described it as a mental pendulum swinging between jubilant cries and introspective reflections.
The world-famous American composer Dana Wilson (1946), also a masterful jazz pianist, realized her dream of writing a concert for jazz piano in 2018. For concert jazz piano and wind orchestra Lithuanian jazz pianist Dmitrijs Golovanovs will play the role of soloist at the VEF Culture Palace. The piano master of the neighboring countries is characterized by excellent knowledge of the language of jazz music, as well as a refined and expressive style of playing.
