CelebritiesOprah Winfrey (67) has a small circle of friends, she told in the podcast ‘Making Space with Hoda Kotb’. She only counts three people among her friends. One of these is Maria Shriver (65), the ex-wife of Arnold Schwarzenegger (74).

Oprah Winfrey got to know Maria Shriver in a very special place, she revealed. “I first met her in the toilet,” it sounds. “We both worked very early in the morning at WJZ-TV. I made bits for the morning show, she had a magazine in the evenings and stayed up all night. She was standing in the toilet room and splashed water on her face. We started talking. I will forever consider that a divine moment because she is one of those true, close friends who have supported me throughout my career.”

“I don’t have many friends,” continued the TV icon. “Everyone knows Gayle King (a journalist, ed.). Then there’s Maria, and then Bob Greene (a personal trainer, ed.). That’s it I met Gayle and Maria during the same period. Gayle and I have been friends for 42 years, and Maria and I have known each other for 42 years. I never really expanded that circle of friends, until very recently. Over the past five years I have still befriended a few people.”

Shriver himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ex-wife, was also enthusiastic about their friendship. Winfrey’s small gestures, such as bringing a cup of coffee now and then, have especially touched her deeply. “It was so moving for me because I didn’t grow up like that. No one ever brought me a cup of coffee or a glass of water. Even though I had a very close relationship with my mother, she never really mothered me that way. Oprah was not mothered at home either. So I think that’s why we kind of mother each other.”
