Opposition Party Coalition Wins Czech Parliamentary Election / Article

Despite forecasts, the previous Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Andrei Babisz, has admitted defeat in the parliamentary elections. The opposition center-right coalition has won.

The coalition called “Together” consists of three center-right parties – the Civic Democrats, “TOP 09” and the Christian Democrats. Almost 28 percent of Czech voters voted for them. Meanwhile, about 27 percent of voters have supported the populist party led by Babish. The other coalition of opposition parties won about 16 percent of the vote. This means that the two associations of opposition parties together have secured a majority in the lower house of parliament, winning 108 out of 200 seats.

Experts say that the new balance of political power will lead to significant changes in Czech politics. At the same time, this morning Babišs met with President Milos Zeman, who had previously stated that he would nominate party leaders, not coalition leaders, as prime minister, suggesting that Babiš could still be entrusted with forming a government.
