Opposition Member Boris Nadezhdin Collecting Signatures to Run for President in Russia Against Putin

Hundreds of people lined up in Moscow today to support opposition member Boris Nadezhdin in his bid to run in March’s presidential elections. They have come to his office to get Nadezhdin on the ballot, he needs a hundred thousand signatures to run against President Vladimir Putin.

According to the website of the Kremlin-critical politician, he has now collected almost 85 thousand signatures, but time is running out. He must receive the necessary support before the end of January.

The 60-year-old Nadezhdin has cautiously spoken out in favor of “peace” in Ukraine and called the war a fatal mistake. “Not one of the set goals has been achieved,” his online manifesto states. Criticism of the invasion is rare in Russia because it carries high penalties.

People lining up to sign for Nadezhdin say they see him as an alternative to the current rulers.

Putin almost certainly cannot avoid a new presidential term, but if an opposition member gets many votes, it could still be a major setback for the Kremlin. So far, all other candidates are pro-Putin. Most well-known opposition figures, such as Alexei Navalny, are in prison or abroad.
