Opinions on the game Starfield: Positive Reviews, Disappointed Players, and High Player Count

Opinions on the game Starfield are different, and there is no point in repeating what can be read in this summary of ours, what the game actually is. So, just very briefly, although there are mostly positive reviews from the game editors (see the current average 87 ze 100 from game editors at Metacriticwhere is also the average from the players 5,4 z 10), is a group of players who expected much more from the game in terms of space exploration, discovery of new planets and their exploration, which is basically cut down to the bare minimum here. And they are the ones who are now very disappointed with the game (and often show it loudly), because instead they got another typical Bethesda game, which is primarily an RPG, not a space simulator (more on that in the article linked above).

Recall that the game was from 1st September available in early access mode where it could be purchased and played if the more expensive Premium or Constellation editions were purchased. September 6 then there was the official launch of the game, when even those who bought the standard version could start playing it. And 12 hours ago, the Starfield team posted on Twitter that more than 6 million players have already played the game:

Whereas a day earlier Phil SpencerCEO of Microsoft’s gaming division, boasted on his Twitter account that more than 1 million players played the game simultaneously across all platforms on the first day after launch (September 6):

Reaching the 1 million concurrent player mark is a nice result. Website statistics Steam Charts shows that after the September 6th release (marked on the chart with the note “Rel” as short for “Release”), there was only a relatively small increase in PC players on Steam compared to the previous days (both in terms of peak numbers and trend). , when the game was in early access and could only be played legally by those who paid extra for the more expensive Premium or Constellation version. This in itself is rather interesting that, at least on the PC platform, such a large number of interested parties paid extra for the more expensive version. The chart shows the September 6 high on the value 269.177while it should be emphasized that it goes only for data related to Steam. Xbox Series X|S, Microsoft Store, Game Pass, Cloud platforms are not taken into account.

Since I am part of the target audience for this game, I will add my own perspective as a long-time player of Bethesda’s open world RPG games, as well as a lover of the sci-fi genre in all its forms.

I know Bethesda’s previous games very well (Skyrim – 2011, Fallout 4 – 2015, Fallout 76 – 2018), in which I have spent many tens of hours over the years. And since it was known in advance that Starfield would use the same engine (albeit improved to offer new game mechanics and graphic effects), which already has certain technical limitations in its foundation, the final form of Starfield did not surprise me at all. I’m not disappointed either, but I also add that I’m not exactly thrilled either. A person does not necessarily have a strong opinion and can be somewhere in between. It’s simply another open world RPG from Bethesda in a new sci-fi setting that many players will no doubt spend a lot of time with over the years, similar to Bethesda’s previous titles.

If someone is disappointed with the game, OK, everyone likes different things, everyone had different expectations, the game is definitely not perfect and has its weaknesses (see the article linked above). I would add, however, that it was enough to inform in advance what the game could actually be and what Bethesda’s previous games of this type were. Then one would not have exaggerated expectations and would not succumb to the hype that has arisen around the game. And if it upsets someone that some other players enjoy this game and are not disappointed by it – what to say. If only:

Live long and prosper!
