OpenSignal Research Reveals the Quality of Cellular Operators in Indonesia

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

mobile network research company, OpenSignal released the quality of various cellular operators in Indonesia. Five Indonesian national operators – 3, Indosat, Smartfren, Telkomsel, and XL, for a period of 90 days, from August 1, 2021 to October 29, 2021.

Telkomsel won the best award in four categories, namely download speed experience, upload speed experience, video experience, and 4G coverage experience.

Telkomsel excels in download speed experience and upload speed experience. The fastest average download speed is 16.3 Mbps and upload speed is 8.1 Mbps on the Telkomsel network.

However, XL and Indosat, which came in second, trailed slightly, with slightly lower scores (0.8-0.9 Mbps), in download speed experience and upload speed experience, respectively.

Since the last report, XL users saw the biggest increase of 2.9 Mbps in experience download speed, while Indosat users reported the biggest growth of 1.4 Mbps in upload speed experience – 0.1 Mbps higher than Telkomsel in both categories.

Besides Telkomsel, another operator who also received the best title was Tri. Tri is said to remain at the top of the voice app category and excel for gaming experiences.

This shows that Opensignal application users in Indonesia consistently get the best experience when playing multiplayer mobile games and using over-the-top (OTT) voice applications when connected to the Tri cellular network throughout Indonesia.

Tri also made wins in the video experience sector in several regions, such as Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, and Sumatra.

Then another cellular operator that also won the title was Smartfren, which won the competition in the 4G availability sector.

4G availability in Indonesia is currently reported to have exceeded 90 percent across all operators. And since the last report, Opensignal users in Indonesia have seen an increase in 4G availability on most networks.

This report released by Opensignal also analyzes the 5G network experience that has been present in Indonesia.

Although 5G is still in its early stages, inadequate access to 5G spectrum remains one of the most important challenges for all operators in Indonesia.

So, to deal with problems with the spectrum, operators in Indonesia and their regulators are said to need to work together – either by adjusting part or all of the spectrum they currently use for 3G and/or 4G networks or through network consolidation.
