“OpenAI’s ChatGPT: Operational Costs and Losses Revealed in Recent Report”

Apparently build chatbot artificial intelligence (AI) clever ChatGPT requires no small amount of funds. In fact, according to recent reports, OpenAI as the developer of ChatGPT suffered losses of up to half a billion dollars.

This report comes from The Information whose source is three people who are familiar with OpenAI finance. The source claims OpenAI lost USD 540 million or around IDR 7.9 trillion last year, as quoted from Insider, Saturday (6/5/2023).

OpenAI itself recently received an injection of billions of dollars in funding from Microsoft. However, this loss figure shows the amount of funds needed to operate AI products.

Last month, Chief Analyst from SemiAnalysis Dylan Patel predicted that OpenAI would cost around USD 700,000 per day to operate the ChatGPT server.

Patel estimates the cost is necessary to operate GPT-3. Currently OpenAI has released a more advanced GPT-4 for paying customers, and the operational costs are expected to be more expensive.

Especially ChatGPT recently became the fastest growing app after getting 100 million monthly active users within two months of launch. The greater the number of users, the more operational costs will swell.

Not long ago, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman alluded to the increase in operational costs. He even said that OpenAI would be the most capital-intensive startup in the history of Silicon Valley.

The Information report said Altman suggested OpenAI could raise around USD 100 billion in funds in the next few years to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI), aka AI that is as smart as the human brain.

Given the growing popularity of generative AI, OpenAI’s revenue is also predicted to soar in the next few years. This year, OpenAI is predicted to earn USD 200 million, before skyrocketing to USD 1 billion in 2024.
