In the name of modernity and an accessible electrified powertrain, Opel expands the Corsa family, through the new 48 Volt hybrid solution. It hadn’t happened yet. But, as we know, there is a first time for everything and now comes the time to break this “taboo”. In the transition towards totally electric mobility, the House of Lightning does not yet feel like saying goodbye to internal combustion.
Not at least permanently, also because the costs of full electrics are out of budget for a significant part of potential consumers. While the parent company Stellantis is working on innovative solutions relating to batteries, the German company therefore gradually continues its path.
The benefits of the 48V hybrid
Behind the turning point in the Opel range, a plurality of benefits. First of all, efficiency in terms of consumption and CO2 emissions increases by 18% compared to non-electrified petrol cars. Thus, driving in EV mode reaches up to 50% of driving time in the city. Finally, the simplicity and ease of use are an added value, since it is not necessary to recharge it from an external source.
The pleasure felt behind the wheel is remarkable. Under the hood pulsates a petrol enginewhich is assisted, in the acceleration phase, by a 21 kW/28 HP electric module. In combination, a new six-speed electrified dual-clutch gearbox operates. Three driving modes: Eco, Normal and Sport.
The driver benefits from various driving assistance systems (ADAS), including lane assist and forward collision warning, with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection. The number of road victims that consume us every year remains high; therefore, in addition to more responsible conduct on the part of motorists, manufacturers also have the obligation to promote safety. The Blitz provides this through an “electronic brain” which is constantly being improved.
Among other things, it is possible to add optional technologies, such as the anti-glare Intelli-Lux LED Matrix lighting system. Traveling by road at night is therefore decidedly less complicated, and not even other drivers traveling in the opposite direction are distracted.
The interiors and prices
Once you set foot on board, you are catapulted into a sophisticated atmosphere. The fully digital dashboard offers specific information relating to the hybrid mechanism. The information display, which can be ordered separately or as standard on the GS version, allows you to immediately know the power and energy flow.
Based on the integrated Snapdragon Cockpit, the multimedia infotainment system includes a 10-inch diagonal color touchscreen, compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The smartphones are connected wirelessly. Connectivity is enhanced by advanced technologies such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 4G.
The 48V hybrid Opel Corsa can already be ordered starting from 23,900 euroswhich will further reduce for Italians when the Government provides the 2024 car incentives. In total, the executive will allocate almost one billion euros (950 million euros), but the slowdown in bureaucratic procedures forces us to be patient.
