Only Religious Holidays on ‘Clamped’ Days are Shifted

Jakarta

Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) said the government’s move to shift religious holidays to limit the mobility of citizens was irrelevant. Coordinating Minister for PMK Muhadjir Effendy respond to the MUI’s criticism.

“This is a positive and constructive criticism. What was conveyed by the MUI was also taken into consideration when the decision to shift the holiday was taken,” said Muhadjir to detik.com, Monday (11/10/2021).

“Religious holidays that are shifted are only those that fall on ‘tight’ days, which makes the holiday period longer,” he explained.

This policy was taken, said Muhadjir, reflecting on the previous long holidays. Where people make massive movements if there is a tight day.

So it is very risky to spread Corona cases on tight days because many people take advantage of their free time to go out of town.

“For the current situation, the risk is still very possible and must be avoided. And according to religious rules, avoiding the risk is prioritized over the benefits of the holiday,” said Muhadjir.

“Another consideration is that there are no ritual activities that must be held on religious holidays whose holidays have been shifted,” he continued.

Director General of Islamic Community Guidance Kamaruddin Amin said that the shift in religious holidays did not mean that people were not allowed to celebrate the Prophet’s Birthday. Maulid, explained Kamaruddin, may be held other than holidays with due observance of health protocols.

“Shifting holidays is only to avoid the potential for massive mass mobility because of the potential for long holidays. Even though the pandemic has slowed down, we still have to be vigilant, we must not slack off in implementing the prokes and we still have to be fully aware that we are still in a pandemic period,” said Kamaruddin.
