One of the oldest whiskeys in the world was in Groningen and was sold for more than 100,000 euros | Inland

The ‘Gordon & Macphail Generations Glenlivet 80 years old’ is an eighty-year-old single malt from the Glenlivet distillery, in the Speyside region of Scotland, which has been bottled by the independent bottler Gordon & Macphail,” writes Tom-Roderick Muthert.

‘Gordon & Macphail is known for its ability to age whiskeys for a very long time and with a 75-year-old Mortlach also held the record for the world’s oldest whiskey.’

Never seen

The eighty-year-old Glenlivet is therefore a very old and unique whiskey, says Muthert. “We’ve never seen a whiskey of this age and although there are rumors that Gordon & Macphail have casks of whiskey that are even older, this will be the most unique whiskey we see worldwide for now.”

Few whiskeys live more than fifty years

Few whiskeys live past the age of fifty. A Scottish single malt must be aged for at least three years in oak barrels and bottled at 40 percent alcohol or higher. Most barrels are filled at 63.5 percent and because the alcohol evaporates during maturation ( angel’s share mentioned) are few whiskeys, with a percentage above 40 percent, fifty years or older.

Muthert: “Fifty-year-old whiskeys are already a rarity and we only see them two or three times a year in our store. That emphasizes all the more how special this eighty-year-old Glenlivet is. We are proud that these in Musselkanaal, of all places , has arrived.”

Sold

The bottle has now left Musselkanaal again: it has been sold. What did the buyer pay for it? “We never make statements about that,” says Aeilke Muthert.

In any case, more than 100,000 euros, the asking price. Bottle number 1 from the same cask was recently auctioned in Hong Kong for US$193,000.

Oldest whiskey in the world

The oldest whiskey in the world, a ‘Baker’s Pure Rye Whiskey’ was distilled in 1847 according to Guinness World Records, making it 174 years old. The bottle was – at least on November 1, 2018 – in the possession of the American Adam Herz.
