One hundred Italian writers at the Buchmesse. With the “solos” of Maraini, Baricco and Magris and the Volo concert

There will be “solos”. Dacia Maraini, Claudio Magris e Alessandro Baricco at the Frankfurt Buchmesse 2024 which will see Italy as the guest of honor, 36 years after the last time, from 16 to 20 October. The government’s extraordinary commissioner anticipates this Mauro Mazzain Bologna for the Children’s Book Fair which represents a fundamental stage of “Destination Frankfurt”. There will be testimonials Carlo Rovelli, Susanna Tamaro and Stefano Zecchi.

One hundred Italian writers were invited to the Buchmesse, protagonists of over 150 meetings. “The Italian Publishers Association brought us a range of names and together we arrived at 100 authors representing all genres. The solos will focus on specific skills, with Magris we will talk about Central Europe. The other writers will make literary genre comparisons in four arenas, two in the pavilion designed by Stefano Boeri and two in the IEA space. There will be specific meetings on children’s publishing and many cultural comparisons regardless of literature. We have chosen themes that concern Europe, culture must create debate and convergence where politics often divides and contrasts” explains Mazza.

Great space, for Italy as guest of honor at the Frankfurt Fair, also for music: “We closed with The flight, who will give a concert on the evening of Saturday 19 October in the Festhalle of the Buchmesse district. The young one Frida Bollani Magoni, daughter of Stefano Bollani, she will play the national anthems on the piano, Italian and I believe also German, and will sing a song with her angelic voice. Then we will have a Rigoletto by Verdi and we would like to pay a worthy homage to the centenary of Giacomo Puccini’s death. We will disseminate every unspoken moment of the five days of the Buchmesse with music, including pop music” announced the extraordinary commissioner who will unveil the program on May 28th at a conference in Frankfurt.

The next stop of “Destination Frankfurt” is on May 9th Turin Book Fair where there will be a meeting between Commissioner Mauro Mazza and “his then counterpart Stefano Rolando, who as head of the Publishing Department at Palazzo Chigi organized Italy as guest of honor in Frankfurt in 1988. The thing that few people know is that before At the time, the Buchmesse did not have a country as the guest of honour. Italy was the first to be designated. The comparison between me and Rolando – says Mazza – will serve to show how we were and how we have become. We will have a photographic panel with the photos from back then. Andreotti Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bono Parrino Minister of Cultural Heritage. There was the Berlin Wall, two Germanys. In that year, 1988, the Turin Book Fair was also born. And then we have other events of approach: June 12th in Dortmund where there will be a concert by the Scarlatti of Naples with Beatrice Venezi who conducts the orchestra three days before Italy’s debut at the final of the European Football Championships. It’s not a coincidence because Germans like us love football a lot, Italy returns to an important stage and we like to unite and mix things like we Italians do: the best of the best with Scarlatti and hopefully the best of football with the Azzurri . On August 29th there will be a concert by the Milan Scala Philharmonic Orchestra in Berlin.”

At the BBPlus Theater in Bologna Children’s Book Fair for “Destination Frankfurt” comparison on Narrations, characters and illustrations: Italian publishing for children abroad. “The BCBF is one of the most important events as a lead-up to Frankfurt 2024 because it is special. We have many little readers who unfortunately grow up trying to be great readers and become terrible readers. In preschool age, the book in the hand is a game, it is a fascinating thing. As we grow up, the charm of the book fades or diminishes a lot, partly due to the fault of our parents and teachers, but also because mentally the short dimension of all things accompanies us: from the tweet to the reel on Instagram, from the film that is too long, better an episode of the TV series. Our attention span is naturally short and we need to find a meeting point”, she underlines.

He recently joined the jury of Friends of the Strega Prize SundayMazza considers it “a gift and a privilege”. you have to walk slalom among the books, but I have thousands of them. I’m a bibliomaniac if not a bibliophile. I caress them, I rearrange them, I smell them, I assemble and dismantle the shelves. Books are a passion” says Mazza.
