One billion trees in three years: Ukraine’s woodland dream

Only a few days after Cop26, Ukraine launches into an ambitious reforestation plan: President Volodimir Zelenskiy promises to plant no less than a billion trees over the next three years.

The operation has already started, as here in the Zhitomir region. Yuriy Bolokhovets, the director of the Ukrainian Forestry Agency, is very proud of the project: “Europe has said it wants to plant three billion trees in ten years. But our plan is to plant one billion in three years.”

However, according to a Ukrainian scientist, a quick calculation shows that the reforestation project has everything of a greenwashing operation … Bohdan Prots explains:“They have to plant ten trees per second or 200 seedlings per second, so technically that’s just impossible.”

If 16% of the territory of Ukraine is covered by forests, it should be 4% more for the country to be armed to fight climate change.
