“could become the biggest party”
Omtzigt’s decision changes the campaign in the Netherlands. “He is by far the most popular politician in the Netherlands,” says Jeroen Reygaert, who follows Dutch politics for VRT NWS. “He is the man who, among other things, dug into the benefits affair, in which people were wrongly seen as fraudsters by the government for years. It earned him a reputation as a hardworking and critical Member of Parliament.”
He is now introducing a new party and is turning the party political landscape in the Netherlands upside down. “According to a hypothetical poll last week – when it was not yet clear whether he would participate – that party could become head and shoulders the largest and reach just under 30 percent,” says Reygaert. “Yet he says that he does not have the ambition to become prime minister or even a minister: he himself would like to continue his role as the most popular member of parliament.”
