Olympus E-M10 Mark IV with new sensor in fM check

Little has changed externally compared to the predecessor E-M10 Mark III. The handle has been redesigned a bit, the controls are in the usual place. The biggest external change is the new folding monitor, which can now be brought down to the selfie position. A monitor that could also be folded out to the side would have been better, since the monitor is hidden by the tele when using the tripod. Otherwise, the touch monitor has a diagonal of 3.0 inches and a resolution of 1.04 million points. The viewfinder is also unchanged: it has a magnification of 1.23x (0.62x compared to the small image) and resolves 2.36 million points.

E-M10 Mark IV now with 20 megapixels

With the inner values Olympus updated the camera: the sensor now has a resolution of 20 instead of 16 megapixels and the algorithms for contrast AF have been revised. This is how AF tracking should work better and face / eye AF should not have any problems even for people with a profile looking down.

Olympus has also improved the internal image stabilizer (IBIS) somewhat. Measured according to the CIPA standard, it now compensates 4.5 instead of 4 aperture steps. The Sync-IS, i.e. the combination of IBIS and lens stabilizer, is still not supported. Electronic stabilization can be activated in video mode (up to 4K / 30p).

Wireless flash

The E-M10 Mark IV masters wireless flash control as part of the Olympus RC system in combination with the FC-WR control unit and a WR flash. Furthermore, the silent release with e-shutter is now possible in all common exposure modes. As before, the mechanical shutter is designed for 1/4000 s, the electronic one can handle up to 1 / 16,000 s. A number of smaller functions have been added, including the “Instant image” type filter and – for the first time in an OM-D – the pan-panorama mode. Also new is the option to charge the camera via USB, but Olympus has saved the charging cradle – following the general trend. The OI.Share app has also been revised and now has a red mode for night photography. In addition to the usual data transmission and control of the camera with live view via WiFi, it is now also possible to trigger the camera via Bluetooth without a preview on the smartphone.

The new OM-D shoots series when using the electronic shutter at up to 15 frames / s or 6.3 frames / s with auto focus tracking. With a mechanical shutter it is 8.7 frames / s without or 5 frames / s with tracking. It is saved on an SD card, whereby the fast UHS-II standard is also supported.

First laboratory results

The first JPEG measurements from our test laboratory have just come in. The dissolution of the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV Accordingly, it is significantly better, especially in the higher ISO levels (from ISO 400), with efficiencies over 80% up to ISO 3200. The image noise up to ISO 3200 is on a similar level to that of the predecessor, despite the higher levels Resolution even better. You can read the detailed test in fotoMAGAZIN 10/20 (from September 8th at the kiosk).

Pricing and availability

The OM-D E-M10 Mark IV will be available from mid-August for around 700 euros, with the ED 3.5-5.6 / 14-42 mm EZ 850 euros will be charged.
