Oliveira Wins Round 1 Over Gaethje, Still UFC Champion

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Charles Oliveira defended his UFC lightweight world title after winning by first round submission over Justin Gaethje at UFC 274, Sunday (8/5) afternoon WIB.

In the fight that was held at the Footprint Center, Phoenix, Oliveira had time to stumble against Gaethje, who is trying to win the UFC world title for the second time since being defeated by Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2020.

Within a minute Oliveira was twice beaten by Gaethje and fell to the canvas. Oliveira’s left temple also looks bloody.

Oliveira relies a lot on knee attacks. Meanwhile Gathje played a down kick attack.

Gaethje several times had the opportunity to play on the ground, but was not taken advantage of and chose to fight on the top. Gaethje prefers to let Oliveira stand up and do a standing fight.

An Oliveira punch had made Gaethje fall. Oliveira took advantage of the moment by doing a lock on the neck.

Oliveira then sealed a rear naked choke submission victory with 3 minutes and 22 seconds in the first round.

This is Oliveira’s second defense of the UFC lightweight world title since capturing the vacant title by beating Michael Chandler in May 2021.

Oliveira then defended his title for the first time against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269, December 11, 2021.
