As if the house jumped. This is how Oleksandr describes the moment a Russian missile hit an apartment in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Thursday night.

He lives right next to the block that was attacked. Oleksandr woke up suddenly when it slammed, jumped up from the sofa he was lying on, and looked out of the apartment’s now broken windows. The sight of a white cloud of smoke was the first thing he saw.

The first thing he thought of was his three-year-old grandson. She was out on the playground right next door. He ran out to check how things were going.
