OLED televisions beat LCD devices | CEToday

Which television is suitable for which user? And what’s better OLED or LCD? Stiftung Warentest got to the bottom of these questions. The testers examined 29 current TV sets from LG, Panasonic, Samsung and Sony. The devices were priced between 400 and 4000 euros and had screen diagonals between 43 and 65 inches.

The conclusion of the testers: OLED devices deliver better image quality. They would have richer blacks and stronger contrasts than LCD televisions. In the case of televisions with self-illuminating pixels made of organic light-emitting diodes, the viewing angle is also greater. According to Stiftung Warentest, OLED devices are still relatively expensive. But the quality is almost always right.

The sound often fails

The test also showed that many providers reserve the best quality for the larger televisions. “Quite a few providers no longer bring out any 32 or 24-inch models,” writes Stiftung Warentest.

The consumer organization found deficiencies mainly in terms of sound. “The images of modern televisions are getting better and better. Only the sound does not grow with them,” says the test result. Only a few models in the higher price segment received the “very good” seal in this category. The good sound comes from the fact that these televisions usually have an integrated soundbar.

Which TV is suitable for whom?

  • Familys Stiftung Warentest recommends a television with the largest possible viewing angle.

  • Consumers who believe in good sound the testers recommend a model with an integrated soundbar. Alternatively, users could buy an additional soundbar or a separate speaker system. “The cheapest way to do it is with an existing stereo system if its speakers can be placed on the left and right of the television,” says the test.

  • Streaming-Fans would have the largest selection. According to Stiftung Warentest, all modern televisions with an HDMI socket are suitable for streaming via smartphone, tablet or notebook. However, the sometimes poor and seemingly arbitrarily changing selection of streaming apps on smart TVs and slow response times when surfing are annoying when streaming.

  • For those interested in sports the testers recommend a television that provides good picture quality with fast movements.
