Some people may think joint pain as a common nuisance and is often taken for granted. Pain itself is even considered to be cured by massage or applying massage oil alone.

What exactly is a neuropathic disease that can make sufferers experience impotence to depression so they have to be wary of?

The doctor who also serves as Chair of the Pokdi Neuro Physiology of the Association of Indonesian Neurologist (PERDOSSI), Manfaluthy Hakim explained that neuropathy is peripheral nerve damage that can be experienced by anyone. Although many complaints are experienced by those who have entered old age.

“It feels numb and sometimes there is a tingling sensation,” said Manfaluthy at the Neurobion – Press Conference Neuropathy Awareness Week 2022 event which was held online, Monday (20/6).

Causes of neuropathy

This disease can be caused by various things. Starting from lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, vitamin deficiency, to injuries to certain body parts. The following are things that can cause neuropathy;

– Diabetes

– Autoimmune disease
– viral or bacterial infection,
– Tumors or cancer,
– Birth defects
– Blood vessel disorders

Who can get neuropathy?

Manfaluthy said this disease can be experienced by anyone. It’s just that there are groups of people who are most at risk of developing this disease, namely as follows;

– Elderly
– Diabetics
– There is a family who has neuropathy
– Hypertension
– Smoking
– Consuming alcohol
– Suffering from vascular diseases such as heart
– Cancer
– Exposure to chemicals

Symptoms

The following are signs or symptoms of neuropathy that you can watch out for and you can immediately go to a hospital or doctor so they can be treated

1. Sensory symptoms

Sensory disturbances are most pronounced in those with neuropathic disease. Manfaluthy explained that the symptoms can range from tingling, especially in the hands and feet, to changes in taste sensors, such as feeling severe pain and a burning sensation.

“Patients can also lose the ability to coordinate the body, to lose body reflexes,” said Manfaluthy.

2. Motor symptoms

Motor nerves can be disrupted due to this disease. If this happens it is usually characterized by weakness, muscle cramps, difficulty walking or moving hands and feet to loss of muscle control.

3. Gejala autonom

Autonomic symptoms occur in the autonomic nerves that function to regulate functions in the body, such as blood pressure, heart rate, to the digestive system. You will experience nausea and vomiting, indigestion, and even dizziness when you stand up if you have neuropathy.
