Hello, the revoilou! After two years away from the paddocks of the Grands Prix, Fernando Alonso will make his comeback in Formula 1 starting next season. As it had been in the air for a while, the Spaniard succumbed to the sirens of the Renault F1 Team to replace Daniel Ricciardo, departing for McLaren. The Asturian will team up with the French Esteban Ocon.
Fernando Alonso and the diamond, it’s a love story that unfortunately ended in pudding water. Nano was indeed the great architect of the success of the diamond when he returned to Formula 1 in 2002. Protected by Flavio Briatore, Alonso spent his first season in the shadow of Jarno Trulli and Jenson Button before being established instead of the Briton in 2003. A first victory will be won in Hungary. The rest, we know it: 16 other victories, and especially two world champion titles will follow. Returning to the fold in 2008 after a missed fugue at McLaren, Fernando could not unfortunately count on a single-seater able to allow him to aim for the title. At the end of 2009, he finally said goodbye to Renault to take up the Ferrari challenge.
Twelve years later, Alonso is back to Enstone. Obviously, the context will be very different since his mentors Flavio Briatore and Pat Symonds have not been there for a long time. And Esteban Ocon will not be a convenient teammate. But soon 39, the Spaniard has nothing more to lose and the Renault challenge is significant. Finally, giving the Jaunes the first podium they have been waiting for since 2016 and the start of their second full-time comeback is all the trouble we wish for them.
