Offenburg: GRÜNE JUGEND Ortenau criticizes participation in Corona “walks” – criticism of racism, anti-Semitism and historical relativism

At their general meeting last Sunday, March 6th, 2022, the GRÜNE JUGEND Ortenau voted in favor of a motion by the working groups Health and Diversity & Democracy, as well as the internal project team for organizing the counter-protests.

The application, submitted by Juni Schandl on his behalf, primarily criticizes the racism, anti-Semitism and historical relativism that is omnipresent at the unauthorized demonstrations.

We have taken a critical look at party members who take part in these “walks” and would like to remind them, as the “conscience of the BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN party”, of the basic values of anti-fascism, safeguarding health and recognizing science.

For the GRÜNE JUGEND Ortenau, it is incomprehensible that anti-Semitic slogans or history-relating comparisons with the time of National Socialism, such as Stars of David with the inscription “unvaccinated”, are spread weekly at the demonstrations, which mocks the victims of the National Socialist regime and puts their suffering into perspective.

Reich flags, swastikas and similar symbols can often be seen at the demonstrations and the corresponding ideas are also spread in Telegram groups that call for walks and anti-constitutional ideas such as the overthrow of the government or calls for armed violence are regularly read in such groups , which is why there is no legitimation for us to take part in these “walks”.

Although not everyone who takes part in the walks is automatically right-wing extremist or anti-Semitic, every walker accepts that by taking part they will continue to carry and enlarge the space for these ideologies. The principle “You don’t go for a walk with Nazis” also applies here.

Therefore, we call on the citizens of Ortenau to engage with the “demonstrations” and the people who take part in them and to recognize and deconstruct the dangerous ideologies that are shared. In addition, we call for a boycott of the “walks”.

Nevertheless, we know that there is understandable criticism of the corona policy of the past few years, and we do not want to deny anyone the personal impact of political measures in the pandemic. We do not want to forbid anyone from expressing peaceful protest. However, we think it is important to take a perspective of solidarity and to clearly distance oneself from right-wing, anti-Semitic and divisive thoughts, which is why participation in the “walks” should be ruled out.
