Offenbach lacks traffic planners

Offenbach wants to tackle its ambitious mobility and traffic goals. But the city lacks planners.

New forms of mobility, more space for cycling and walking, and more citizens: internal participation in transport projects. These points are part of the traffic development plan that the city of Offenbach has put in place for 780,000 euros by 2035. “In metropolitan areas there is no other way of reorganizing mobility. Otherwise we would all suffocate in sheet metal avalanches, ”says Planning Department Head Paul-Gerhard Weiß (FDP). Therefore, points such as car sharing, e-mobility and the reduction of pollutants should be given priority. Always in harmony with “sustainability, digitization and climate-friendly design”, says Horst-Ingo Kupfer, head of the planning department.

The only and not exactly small problem is that the city of Offenbach lacks the traffic planners. There were five posts in order to make traffic more fluid and thus reduce pollutants. “We were only able to fill one of them in August,” reports Kupfer. Four of the five temporary positions are still open. “We have a far greater need for the mandatory tasks,” says Kupfer. Up to eight additional posts are needed to implement the plan by 2035.

Despite the personnel bottlenecks, “we worked through the 2007 plans very well,” says Weiß. The concept at that time was designed until 2015, but could only now be redesigned. Large parts of the bicycle traffic concept had been implemented, only in Bieber there was still no progress. Almost all public transport stops have also been made barrier-free and a dynamic parking guidance system has been set up

Kupfer emphasized that the transport development plan is not a compulsory municipal task. If the city council approves the plan on February 11th, there will be a Europe-wide tendering process until April, before the projects can start in summer.
