Nyrstar will primarily use the super battery to meet its own energy needs. But you and I will also benefit from it. “If there is an excess of electricity on the Belgian grid, we store it in the battery. If there is a shortage, we put it back on the grid. This way we can stabilize the Belgian electrical network and reduce the price.”
The battery consists of 25 large containers on Nyrstar’s premises in Balen. It will be operational by the end of 2022 and will cost around EUR 30 million.
