NYC Businesses Train for Firearm Use Amid Rise in Robberies

“This is not an option that we wanted, but it became a necessity for survival,” says Fernando Mateo, spokesperson for the organization Bodegueros Unidos de América.

Our reporter Joaquín Torres, from Univision 41, went to a shooting range where about 10 people were training to legally carry a firearm.

The rise in robberies at warehouses and other businesses in the Big Apple prompted this training campaign, where they require maximum caution from members.

“Anyone who has a permit to carry weapons must keep it secret, so that no one knows that they have it,” said Radhamés Rodríguez, president of Bodegueros Unidos de América.

This is the course that winemakers must complete to carry firearms

The first step consists of an 18-hour theoretical course, since the training is not only based on knowing how to use firearms, but also other fundamental subjects, such as the management of conflicts and emotions in a moment of stress or adrenaline.

Likewise, tutors teach them the correct times when they can draw their weapon and open fire, and when not, so that they avoid going to jail.

“Only to defend human lives, never to defend property,” explains Johny Núñez, retired NYPD sergeant. “You shouldn’t take it out to say: ‘so that they get scared and leave,'” he stressed.

He insisted: “It has to be a threat of lethal physical force, for me to then respond in the same way, as a defense.”

The course includes learning all the parts of a gun, how to store the gun safely, out of sight, how to carry it, and how to store it safely at home.

Each person who wishes to complete the course must pay a registration fee of $1,200. And at the end, after completing it, they take an exam where they must pass at least 80%.
