NEW YORK — A veterinary technician in upstate New York was convicted of stealing oncology drugs used to treat animals with cancer at the facilities she worked for, the local district attorney’s office said.
Dutchess County resident Elisa Sanchez was convicted Friday of third-degree grand larceny and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, Putnam County District Attorney Robert Tendy announced Monday.
According to charges cited by Tendy, Sanchez, who worked as a veterinary technician for Guardian Veterinary Specialists in Southeast, was convicted of stealing much-needed pet medications.
According to the district attorney, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office was called to the veterinary business on July 28, 2022 after workers allegedly witnessed Sanchez putting these medications in her bag. Workers also saw Sanchez do the same thing in the past before reporting what happened to business management, which ultimately led to his arrest and dismissal from Guardian Veterinary Specialists.
“It’s very sad that a veterinary technician steals essential cancer medications for dogs and cats, people’s beloved pets. It’s very low,” Tendy said.
Sánchez will be sentenced on January 31, 2024. She faces a maximum sentence of 2 1/3 to 7 years in prison.
