Nvidia launched a new graphics card specifically for the Chinese market, namely the RTX 4090D, which is a slower version of the RTX 4090.
The RTX 4090D has a smaller number of CUDA cores than the RTX 4090, namely 14,592, not 16,384. Then the power consumption is slightly smaller, namely 425W vs 450W, as quoted by detikINET from The Verge, Saturday (30/12/2023).
Other specifications are the same as the regular version of the RTX 4090, but Nvidia says the performance is 5% lower for gaming and content creation.
The RTX 4090D was released after the US government tightened the ban on exporting high-end chips to China. As a result of the new regulations, not only can Nvidia not import the AI H800 and A800 GPUs, the RTX 4090 cannot also be imported into China.
“The GeForce RTX 4090D is designed to comply with US government export control regulations,” said Nvidia spokesman Benjamin Berraondo, who also said Nvidia cooperated fully with the US when developing the chip.
The RTX 4090D will be available in China starting next January at a price of 12,999 yuan or around USD 1,836. This launch is expected to overcome the supply problem of high-end graphics cards in China.
It was so rare that in November 2023 it was reported that many factories were dismantling the RTX 4090 and modifying it for AI purposes. Namely by taking the AD102 silicon and GDDR6X memory modules from the RTX 4090, and reassembling them onto a reference PCB with a blower cooling model.
This step was taken because the RTX 4090’s PCB and cooler are too large — typically requiring up to four PCI slots. Meanwhile, PCBs with blower cooling require less space — usually only two PCI slots. So users can install more GPUs on their servers.
This then triggered the US government to create new export ban regulations.
