Case of 12VHPWR fuse connectors from Nvidia on new graphics cards GeForce RTX 4090 keep on. We’re probably not surprised that there was someone who filed for the company Nvidia class action lawsuit on the whole issue. This is Lucas Genova, who did it on November 11 in the Federal Court of California (Nvidia learned of it on November 15). According to him, Nvidia is selling its Ada Lovelace graphics cards with a defective and dangerous power cord, which can cause users’ cards to stop working and can even pose a serious fire hazard.
Genova bought its RTX 4090 at Best Buy for $1,599.99 and points to a Reddit thread that found at least 26 users with a melted power connector. This power connector is believed to fail in 0.05-0.1% of boards. So roughly every 1500th RTX 4090 card is affected by it. So the problem is far from affecting “every other” card, as it might sometimes appear to be. On the other hand, this means that there are at least several dozen cases that could have ended in a fire, the consequences of which may not be small.
Sasa Marinkovic, director of gaming marketing at AMD, is now making fun of the whole Nvidia affair. On her Twitter, she showed off the traditional 8-pin power connectors that new graphics cards will feature Radeon RX 7900 and added the message “Stay safe this holiday season”, which can be translated as “Stay safe this holiday season”.
