number of virus tests at lowest since December 2020

Good news, the number of screenings has just fallen to its lowest since December 2022 in France.

The health situation continues to improve in France. The government announced this week that the mask would no longer be compulsory in public transport from next week. For its part, data from the Department of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (Drees), attached to the Ministry of Health, have just revealed that the number of tests for the Covid-19 virus continued to decline. Falling since the beginning of April, this data has indeed just fallen below the two million mark with 1.7 million tests carried out last week.

Fewer and fewer Covid-19 screening tests carried out in France

Overall, the number of direct debits fell by 55% in one month. This decrease follows in particular that of the curve of Covid-19 cases. The number of screening tests thus fell to the same level as in December 2020 last week. The DREEs also emphasizes that ” the number of tests is down for all age groups “, with a drop of more than 15% for the five age groups, against 20% among 16-25 year olds.

Regarding the reasons for this drop, the May 8 holiday may be one of them. Indeed, pharmacies and laboratories are traditionally less busy during this period. In detail, this drop in the number of screening tests was constant throughout the week with no more than 400,000 samples each day and a maximum on Monday with 364,000 samples. Of note, May 8 was the day with the fewest tests since late June 2021.

During the month of April 2022, a total of 12.65 million tests were recorded, the lowest number of samples since November 2021 as well as the emergence of the Omicron variant. However, the year 2022 is the victim of massive demand with already 31% of all 295 million direct debits recorded since mid-June 2020.
