Number of patients in intensive care increased by half in …

The number of intensive care beds occupied by corona patients has increased by half in one week. This is evident from the most recent figures from Sciensano. On Tuesday, 2,778 new infections were also diagnosed, a record.

In the period from September 23 to September 29, an average of 1,759 new infections were detected, an increase of 12 percent compared to the previous seven days. This is evident from the new figures from the health institute Sciensano. The positivity rate of the tests taken climbs to 5.8 percent.

So far, 2,778 positive tests were reported on Tuesday, the highest number since the start of the corona crisis, although it remains important to emphasize that testing was much less broad at the first peak.

The increase is also becoming increasingly visible in hospitals. The number of beds occupied by covid-19 patients in the intensive care unit has increased by half in a week.

Where 109 intensive care beds were taken on Friday 25 September, this was 163 on Friday 2 October. This is the highest figure since 2 June. Then 172 covid-19 patients were in intensive care. In total there are 789 corona patients in the hospitals. During the last week, an average of around 68 new patients were admitted every day.

Finally, the number of deaths is also rising faster. On average, there are 8.1 deaths per day from covid-19, an increase of 4.9 percent over the previous week. In Belgium, 10,037 people have died from covid-19 since the start of the epidemic. That is fourteen more than the counter indicated on Friday morning.
