The first cases of the disease in Europe were diagnosed in Great Britain more than two weeks ago. The disease is now spreading steadily.

“As this virus spreads through close physical contact, we urge everyone to be on the lookout for any unusual rashes or changes,” said Susan Hopkins of UKHSA. A significant proportion of cases in the UK and the rest of Europe have occurred in gay or bisexual men, she said. That’s why they are especially encouraged to watch out for such symptoms, Hopkins said.

The British have now started vaccinating people who are at high risk because they have contact with infected people. After the administration of the first more than 1,000 doses of the drug Imvanex, more than 3,500 doses are still available, the authorities said.

The British authorities recommend a three-week quarantine for high-risk contacts of infected persons. This concerns people who live in the same house and sexual partners.
