Number of corona patients in intensive care increases by 25 to 1,385 | NOW

The intensive care departments of the Dutch hospitals have a total of 1,385 corona patients, reports the National Network Acute Care (LNAZ) on Sunday afternoon. This is an increase of 25 compared to Saturday. This increase is smaller than Saturday, when 36 new patients were reported.

“We see a stable picture, in line with the previous days and with the figures from the RIVM. This is because the influx is leveling off and more patients are gradually recovering and leaving the IC,” says chairman Ernst Kuipers of the LNAZ.

The new increase of 25 is the total number of new IC admissions due to the corona virus, minus the number of recovered and deceased corona patients on the IC. No current figures are available during the weekend.

Normally, there are 1,150 places in intensive care in the Netherlands, but all Dutch hospitals are scaling up considerably.

On Sunday evening, a total of 2,400 places must be available, of which approximately 510 are intended for patients who are not infected but who are on the IC for other reasons. At the moment 271 of these 510 places are occupied. This means that about five hundred beds are still available for people with the corona virus on Sunday afternoon.

Patients transferred to Germany

To prevent the ICs from becoming full, Dutch IC corona patients are also brought to Germany as a precaution. Up to and including Sunday, 24 patients had already been transferred. That’s seven more than Saturday.

At least 33 German hospitals have now declared themselves willing to admit Dutch patients.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • The corona measures have resulted in an infected person infecting less than one other person on average. Previously, this so-called reproduction number was between two and three.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
