Before the elections, any criticism of Pieter Omtzigt was taboo, but now that the NSC leader does not want to cooperate in an ultra-right majority cabinet, the knives are being sharpened. The parties that would like to govern with NSC are speaking out to De Telegraaf. The newspaper, which wants a cabinet of PVV, BBB, VVD and NSC and gave columnist Ronald Plasterk time off to make that possible, has been very displeased with Omtzigt since the talks broke down.
In de podcast’Hammering away‘ Wouter de Winther airs the dirty laundry of the formation. On the authority of anonymous “protagonists”, the political commentator for De Telegraaf portrays Omtzigt as a psychiatric case. “What happened at the negotiating table was so bizarre. People were often left in complete bewilderment,” says De Winther.
Omtzigt would scream, have “regular crying fits” and often run away. “Then Yeşilgöz, Plasterk or Van Hijum had to follow again.” According to De Winther, NSC’s negotiating partners have made “all kinds of medical analyses” about Omtzigt. “People who sat at the negotiating table with him noticed: wow, this is much worse than we expected, it is actually impossible to work with.” Various members of the NSC faction are also now convinced “that there is no land to be sailed” with Omtzigt, De Winther suggests.
In 2021, Omtzigt was also the target of a whisper campaign, at the time from the CDA. Then SP MP Renske Leijten then spoke out against such anonymous smear campaigns – without much result, as it turns out.
The fact that the key players in the formation are now committing a new character assassination of Omtzigt with the help of De Telegraaf seems to indicate that they have little hope that the talks with NSC will be brought to a successful conclusion. They are already busy sweeping their street clean, and De Winther is helping with the scrubbing.
