“NPR Removes Twitter Accounts as Platform Undermines Credibility”

The American public radio NPR announced this Wednesday that it is removing all its accounts from Twitter, after the platform first classified it with the label “State media” and then changed it to “Publicly funded media.”

In a statement, National Public Radio said: “NPR’s accounts as an organization will no longer be active on Twitter as the platform takes steps that undermine our credibility by mistakenly implying that from a social standpoint editorial, we are not independent”.

It was also known that the journalists who belong to this medium, born in 1970, will have complete freedom to decide whether or not they want to continue on the platform that Elon Musk bought six months ago after paying 40,000 million dollars.

Last week, NPR had already protested being labeled “government funded” as it did the British BBC.

And it is that NPR is financed mainly with advertising and patronage, as well as with the stations of its network. Only less than 1% of its budget comes from federal sources, he said.

After announcing his retirement, he invited his audiences and followers to follow the content through the mobile application, the website, the newsletter and other social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

Another chapter: The New York Times

On April 3, this United States media outlet, one of the 25 most followed accounts on that social network, lost its verification on Twitter after refusing to pay for the new Twitter Blue subscription service that would allow it to keep its badge.

That same day something happened that went a little unnoticed and it was that the @thatbilloakley account posed as The New York Times and received the blue pimp. That is, there was a false verification.

Apparently, everything indicates that behind the maneuver was the American comedian Bill Oakley, recognized mainly for his work on The Simpsons.

“The New York Times lost their verification badge so now I am the New York Times at least until I get banned,” he wrote.

Do you fail in the Circles?

Several users who use the Circle function indicated that the platform shows some of their tweets publicly to other members of the social network in the ‘For you’ section, where personalized recommendations are usually presented.

With this feature, the social network seeks to make users feel more comfortable tweeting and expressing themselves, eliminate the need for alternate or secondary accounts, and avoid switching between protected and public account settings.

The platform has recently registered an error that exposes some of these private publications in the ‘For you’ section -which offers personalized content to users according to their tastes and interests-, in full view of all members of the social network.

“Twitter seems to be completely failing when it comes to filtering private content before delivering it to users,” explained the creator and former Twitch engineer Theo Browne in statements collected by TechCrunch.

He has also pointed out that it is possible that this failure is due to the publication of part of its source code and the operation of the ‘For you’ recommendation algorithm, which the company explained a few days ago with the aim of “taking the first step in a new era of transparency”.

Círculo de Twitter is a tool already available in the web version and the applications for iOS and Android of the social network that allows tweeting content aimed at a smaller group of users and followers.
