Görtler: “The VAR destroys emotions”

St. Gallen’s Lukas Görtler is pissed off at the VAR after the spectacular 3: 3 in the top game against YB and speaks plain text in the Teleclub interview.

In the 97th minute, St.Gallen goalie Lawrence Ati Zigi held the penalty of Guillaume Hoarau at 3-2. Because the keeper broke off the line too early, the VAR intervenes and has the 911 repeated. Lukas Görtler cannot understand that.

With his supposed winning goal to 3: 2 in the 91st minute, Lukas Görtler would have been the match winner in the top game against YB. The referee team around Alain Bieri, however, put a spanner in the works for the German midfielder of FC St. Gallen, which is why Görtler feels forced to stand in front of the camera after the game and to violate the opinion of the referees.

But one thing at a time: The 95th minute is running, the injury time has already expired, but YB has one last attack. In the penalty area Miro Muheim jumps the ball to the hand, the VAR turns on and gives referee Bieri a signal; he should look at the scene again. The referee does that too. And he comes to the verdict: clear handball, penalty.

The emotions in Kybunpark are high, but the stadium explodes when St. Gallen goalie Lawrence Ati Zigi parries Guillaume Hoarau’s penalty. But happy too early: The goalkeeper left the line too early, which is why the VAR reports again to Bieri and signals that the 911 must be repeated. Hoarau then confidently transforms and still secures YB one point.

Penalty drama in St. Gallen: Hoarau saves YB in the 99th minute

What a crazy top game between the FCSG and YB – and what drama in injury time! St. Gallen leads 3: 2 until the 95th minute, then YB gets another penalty. Hoarau misses first, but may start again.

After the final whistle, Lukas Görtler goes to the Teleclub reporters and invites himself to an interview. Apparently, the 25-year-old has to let off steam. «Something has to be said. You play football because you love the emotions. And of course that was the highlight today, “says Görtler and takes a swing:” We’ll come back after 1: 2, do 3: 2 shortly before the end and then there’s another penalty – I don’t know if it was a clear wrong decision . “

But what annoys Görtler is that the video assistant also intervenes in the Zigis Penalty Parade. “Then he intervenes again because the foot is three centimeters away from the line. During the whole season, about 50 penalties are shot and 49 of them go to the goalkeeper with their feet in front of the line. Incomprehensible to me (that the VAR reports). This is how you destroy your emotions, ”says the FCSG professional. “What happened in the last two minutes is illogical.”

Bieri: “I had no choice”

The intervention of the video assistant referee in Volketswil also raises questions for St. Gallen coach Peter Zeidler. “Why doesn’t Mr. Bieri look at the scene himself again?” Asks the 57-year-old about the game. The referee gives the answer to the «SRF»: «It is a clearly measurable decision with no scope for interpretation. The goalie left the line too soon after I warned him about the penalty. The VAR then informed me that I had no choice. »

Bieri shows understanding about the high emotions among the eastern Swiss. Finally, the referee also admits, the millimeter decision against the FCSG would not have been made without the VAR. “But the rules are clear and the clubs were informed about it before the season.”
