Novak Djokovic deported, Serbian president reacts

Jakarta

The Australian government decided to deport Novak Djokovic, due to his vaccination status, made the Serbian player cancel appearances at Australian Open 2022. This was also commented on by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

In his latest statement, Aleksandar Vucic reiterated the notion that Australia was like carrying out a “witch hunt” for Djokovic, whose fate had been a question mark until he was finally deported.

“Those who think they have (shown) principles have proven that they have no principles,” Vucic told Flash quoted RT.com.

Vucic argued that Djokovic had been misinformed by believing he would be given medical dispensation to play at the Australian Open without being vaccinated because he had contracted COVID-19 in December 2021.

“For 10 days, they’ve been mistreating a tennis player until they finally come to a decision they knew they were going to make from day one. Then the harassment started, like a witch hunt for one person from a country.”

“(With the treatment of) Novak, they want to show how the world order and how they can (act to do that) to anyone. (This decision makes) they not only embarrass Novak but also themselves,” said Vucic.

Novak Djokovic is the most successful men’s tennis player in Australian Open history, with a total of nine titles including the last three years. The series of titles in Australia will certainly not continue this year.
