Not Alcohol, This Drink Can Increase The Risk Of Esophageal Cancer By Up To 70 Percent

Certain drinks can significantly increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — There are many risk factors for cancer. According to some studies, certain drinks can increase the risk esophageal cancer to 70 percent and it’s not alcohol.

Consumption sweet drink increasing worldwide. Artificially sweetened drinks and fruit juices are some of the most popular types. One thing that the two drinks have in common is their sweetener, namely sucrose and high-fructose corn syrup.

Naturally, fruit juices contain higher amounts of natural antioxidants and micronutrients, but the main disadvantage to health is their higher free sugar content. They also contain very low levels of fiber compared to whole fruit, which provides some level of protection against disease.

The main danger lies in the amount of sugar. This is because this directly contributes to excessive energy intake. If the drink is consumed in excess, then long-term weight gain can occur, which is known as a precursor to cancer.

“So far, there isn’t much evidence that a low-sugar or low-carb diet lowers your chances of developing cancer. One exception is cancer of the esophagus, the tube that runs from your heart to your stomach,” says Dr. WebMD.

WebMD refers to a study showing that sugar and sugar-sweetened beverages can increase the chances of Esophageal cancer to 70 percent or more. Despite his healthy image in the general population, British Medical Journal said fruit juices generally contain high levels of simple sugars and a higher glycemic index than whole fruit.
