Not a Bible, Amendment to the Constitution is Not Taboo

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

domestic Minister Tito Karnavian mention amendment The 1945 Constitution (UUD) is actually not taboo, because it has been done before and does not violate the rules. According to him, things that are taboo and cannot be changed are only the opening of the 45th Constitution and the scriptures.

“Our Constitution has been amended no? Isn’t that taboo? Which is taboo [diamandemen] the opening. It’s taboo. The holy book is taboo,” Tito told reporters at the Senayan Parliament Complex, Tuesday (5/4).

This was conveyed by Tito in response to the issue of extending the presidential term to three terms. The All-Indonesian Village Government Association (Apdesi) under the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) had called for ‘Jokowi’s three terms’ during the National Gathering (Silatnas) of Village Heads, last Tuesday (29/3).

According to Tito, the village head’s actions did not violate the applicable Village Law because the status of the village head was not a bureaucrat or a State Civil Apparatus (ASN). Thus, there is no prohibition against the village head from carrying out practical politics.

Although, the extension of the term of office violates the constitution that stipulates a two-term presidential term, Tito sees that there is no prohibition against making amendments.

“The Constitution has been amended” no? If there is a change to the Constitution, is there a prohibition?” Tito asked rhetorically.

It is known, the declaration of ‘Jokowi’s three terms’ was made by Apdesi during the Silatnas Kades event which was also attended by the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan and President Joko Widodo.

Tito claimed that the event was not a political agenda even though it was colored by statements of support for President Jokowi to serve three terms.

After that, a number of members of the House of Representatives Commission II compactly questioned the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian regarding the village head’s call during the DPR Commission II meeting with Tito at the parliament complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Tuesday (5/4).

They questioned the political maneuvers carried out by village officials in the event. According to them, the village officials are prohibited from participating in practical politics, let alone supporting Jokowi for three terms because it is against the constitution.
