USA: Confirms that a Norwegian-owned ship was attacked in the Red Sea

US officials confirm that the tanker M/V Swan Atlantic was attacked in the southern Red Sea on Monday by several projectiles from a Houthi-controlled area. Reuters reports.

The ship is owned by Norwegian Inventor Chemical Tankers and was carrying biodiesel, the company confirms E24.

– The ship has been hit by an object. We have connected everyone who needs to be connected. So far we have no damage reports or photos. There are no injuries on board. On board there were 22 crew and 3 armed guards. The ship was hit by an object aft on the port side. Beyond that, we know little, says Øystein Elgan, managing director of Swan Atlantic, to E24.

The USS Carney has responded to the distress call by moving toward the ship, the officials added. The ship is now on its way away from the area that was attacked.

The attack joins a series of several attacks carried out by the Houthi militia against ships in the Red Sea recently.

On Saturday, the Danish container shipping company Mærsk announced that they are stopping all transport in the Red Sea. Several other companies have already stopped their transport there.

The sea route through the Red Sea is considered very important for world trade since a large part of the traffic between Europe and Asia passes there. The US has asked several countries, including Norway, to participate in an international operation to ensure security.
