The Norwegian king Harald V will be operated on on his heart on Friday. It Norwegian royal family reports Thursday that a heart valve must be replaced.
The 83-year-old Norwegian king also had to go under the knife in 2005. At the time, an artificial heart valve was placed. Such heart valves usually do not last longer than ten to fifteen years and therefore the heart valve must now be replaced, the spokesman for the royal family said.
The intervention should ensure that King Harald can breathe properly again. He was hospitalized at the end of September and earlier this month it was announced that he would have to stay there for the time being because of shortness of breath.
Crown Prince Haakon temporarily takes over the duties of the king. He also did this at the end of last year, when King Harald was struggling with a virus infection.
