– Ukraine has an urgent need for more military support and material now. Norway is therefore expanding military support to Ukraine by NOK 2.5 billion to NOK 10 billion for 2023, says Støre early on Tuesday morning.

In addition to this, Norway will give more to NATO’s support fund for Ukraine.

– Norway is increasing its contribution to NATO’s support fund for Ukraine. Norway is providing NOK 300 million in 2023 and will contribute a total of NOK 1.5 billion over five years, says Støre and adds:

– Now this is really needed. It is a clear signal of long-term support for Ukraine’s reform efforts and will tie Ukraine closer to the alliance.

– A historic summit

Støre will be in Lithuania’s capital Vilnius on Tuesday, where heads of state and government have gathered for the NATO summit. Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (Ap) and Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp), and also US President Joe Biden are present in Vilnius.

The summit takes place the day after the news that Turkey agrees to admit Sweden into NATO.

– This will be the most important NATO summit of our time. Among other things, we will adopt a historic boost for NATO’s collective defense capability with regional defense plans that have been updated for the first time since the Cold War, says Støre.

Subsea infrastructure

At the summit, the member states will also establish a NATO center for critical underwater infrastructure.

– The war in Ukraine has once again shown that the protection of critical infrastructure is of great security policy importance. As the largest supplier of gas to Europe, Norway has a particular responsibility for the protection of undersea infrastructure. This was the reason why, together with Germany’s Chancellor Scholz, I took the initiative last year for NATO to have a greater role in this important work, says Støre.
