Cases of Norovirus on the Rise

Recent data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that cases of norovirus, a highly contagious gastrointestinal virus, are increasing in the United States. The rise in cases aligns with the typical seasonal trends for the virus.

In the week ending February 17, over 12% of tests for norovirus came back positive, according to the CDC. This percentage is up from 11.5% the previous week. Notably, the Northeast region has seen a particularly high positivity rate, with over 13% of tests returning positive results. The region has recorded rates above 13% since late January.

It is worth mentioning that, despite the current rise, the norovirus levels during this time last season were higher. Both nationally and in the Northeast, approximately 15% of tests were positive.

Understanding Norovirus and Its Impact

Norovirus is a common cause of acute gastroenteritis, often referred to as a stomach bug, in the United States. The CDC indicates that it leads to approximately 19 million to 21 million illnesses annually. Places with high population density such as nursing homes, day care centers, and cruise ships face a higher risk of outbreaks.

The virus spreads through direct contact with an infected person, consumption of contaminated food or liquids, or touching contaminated surfaces and then touching one’s mouth. It is essential to note that even after symptoms subside, an infected person can still transmit norovirus for two or more weeks.

Recognizing the Symptoms and Recommended Actions

Common symptoms of norovirus infection include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain. While there is no specific treatment, medical professionals recommend staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

The CDC emphasizes the importance of practicing preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, rinsing fruits and vegetables, and thorough cooking of shellfish. These steps considerably reduce the risk of contracting norovirus.

In January, the US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning advising against the sale and consumption of specific oysters from Baja California and Mexico, due to potential norovirus contamination. In another incident in December, approximately 200 suspected cases of norovirus were linked to a sushi restaurant in North Carolina.
