The Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which connects Russia to Germany, is affected by two gas leaks in the Baltic Sea, Danish and Swedish authorities announced on Tuesday 27 September. “The authorities have now been informed that there have been two more leaks in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, also inoperative, but containing gas.”, said the Danish minister of climate and energy. He also announced “raise the level of preparation of the electricity and gas sector” in this Nordic country.

These leaks occur the day after the announcement of another leak in the Nord Stream 2 parallel pipeline. it was built together with the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, to double the Russian gas import capacity in Germany. The leak affects the submarine pipeline, owned by the majority of the Russian giant Gazprom.

One of the Nord Stream 1 leaks occurred in Denmark’s exclusive economic zone, the other in Sweden, according to the two countries. As with the leak detected the day before on Nord Stream 2, security measures have been taken.

Subject of a geopolitical tug-of-war, the two gas pipelines managed by a consortium dependent on the Russian giant Gazprom are not operational due to the consequences of the war in Ukraine. But both are still full of gas.
