No reopening of Belgian borders for non-Europeans for …

The Belgian borders will not open this week for tourists from the fifteen countries who, according to a European recommendation, can travel to the European Union again. That has been stated by Foreign Minister Philippe Goffin on Wednesday. The preparation takes at least until July 7.

On Tuesday, Belgium and the other Member States agreed on a list of fifteen countries whose inhabitants are allowed to make non-essential trips to the European Union again from 1 July. These are Australia, Japan, Canada, Algeria, Georgia, New Zealand, Morocco, Montenegro, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, Uruguay and China, provided that this country also allows European tourists.

Experts from the government services involved are now looking, according to Goffin, on how the Belgian borders can be “cautiously” reopened for people from these countries, and how Belgians can return to some of these countries, taking into account the health measures needed to combat the epidemic keep in control. That will take at least until July 7, according to the minister.

Following the European Recommendation, Belgium is immediately expanding the list of essential essential voyages to four categories: seafarers, persons attending meetings of international organizations, students and highly qualified personnel whose work cannot be carried out remotely. Third-country nationals who are legally resident in the EU can also travel freely around the EU, including Belgium.
