No more harmful duckling on a pond

Bernese Jura

After a long fight, the ban on the hunting of game birds comes into force on the side of Bellelay (BE). So much the better for the Little Grebe.

The Etang de la Noz has been talking about it since 2012.

Eight years of combat is a long time, but the battle led by Jean-Luc Brahier is rewarded: no more ducking in the Etang de la Noz, near Bellelay (BE)! The organizer of the society for the protection of nature “La Libellule” obtained a ban on hunting game birds near the pond, at an altitude of 940 meters.

With its status as a nature reserve, the Etang de la Noz is a nesting place for native or migratory birds. This body of water is considered an important migratory passage between the Doubs valley and the Swiss plateau.

Red List

Among the nesting birds, it is the little grebe that has attracted attention. By ear, the former clerk Jean-Luc Brahier flushed out two couples hidden in the middle of the willows. Placed on the red list, the protected species was not shot, but the disturbance caused by the hunting of other birds caused the loss of the broods, even though the shooting of mallards was not allowed.

“Some hunters make boxes without even picking up the corpses,” observed the amateur ornithologist throughout his fight. The problem with the shots in September is that they frighten the little grebes, whose young are slow to take off. “Without the adults, the chicks that are not of age to fly are no longer fed,” Jean-Luc Brahier reported seven years ago.

Game bird hunting is now prohibited in the area of the pond where it is also forbidden to swim and walk your dog, access to the banks being prohibited during the nesting period. According to “Le Journal du Jura”, the Noz is becoming a high place for the preservation of water birds in Switzerland. No less than 128 species have been listed there, half of which are migratory.
