Yanina Wickmayer (WTA 88) will not play official tennis matches for a while. She hits the pause button to give her body enough time to fully heal. The 34-year-old Wickmayer reported this on social media on Saturday, including on the problem with the back.

“As you know, my body has not really been fit and healthy this year,” Wickmayer says in a written message on social media. “In recent months I have done everything I can to control the pain in my back and to be able to be on the court pain-free, but unfortunately my body does not allow this. The challenges, tough training and winning matches based on character have always been my motivation and the reason why I love this sport so much. Not being able to be that person on the court hurts.”

Wickmayer says that she is therefore taking a step back. “This is to give my body enough time to heal and get strong again so that I can be myself again on the track. As a mother, I have come back to end this tennis chapter in my own way, so you can count on me and my perseverance that I will do everything I can to write a beautiful final chapter!”, Wickmayer concludes optimistically.
