Saudi Arabian again with large unusual projects. Although some areas desertSaudi Arabia wants to have a green nature.

Reported by Arab newsThe Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) is making efforts to preserve and increase the amount of greenery across the kingdom which is mostly covered by desert.

The kingdom is home to 2,000 wild plant species, 600 endangered animal species, and 21 already extinct animals.

SGI is the largest green project ever undertaken by the country. Opened in March 2021, Saudi Arabia wants to reach 450 million trees by 2030.

By the end of 2021, around 10 million trees have been planted in 13 regions of the kingdom.

At first glance, the goal of planting 450 million trees may seem ambitious, not to mention plans to green the desert. But in reality, the Kingdom has about 2.7 million hectares of forest.

Currently, Saudi Arabia has 15 protected areas due to their biodiversity; 12 by land and three by sea. The National Wildlife Center proposes increasing that number to 75, 62 on land and 13 in coastal and marine areas.

“We are committed to increasing vegetation cover, as we have planted 600,000 plants and conducted many seed campaigns to increase vegetation in the reserve,” a KSRNR spokesman told Arab News.

“Trees and shrubs are perennial plants that restore degraded habitats in deserts. These plants are native species of desert habitats and are adapted to harsh desert conditions, such as drought and high temperatures, and do not require excessive water for their ‘irrigation,’ he added. .
