Too accurate 90 years ago, in December 1931, the Norwegian Hotel and Restaurant Workers’ Union was established. According to the union’s first leader, the waiter WA Hartmann, the members shared his fate with the forest and farm workers, which LO had started organizing four years before. No one else was more at the mercy of employers than these groups, said Hartmann, who claimed that 80 percent lived under “medieval patriarchal conditions.”
