No Copa América in Argentina?

As cases of COVID-19 still explode in Argentina and other countries on the continent, the holding of the next Copa América is increasingly threatened.

This Thursday, the Argentinian Ministry of Health communicated new alarming figures concerning the second wave of coronavirus which hit the country: 537 dead, a sad record, more than 27,000 new cases. A health situation that is worsening and has already pushed local football leaders to take action. After the change in the schedules of the professional elite matches, the youth tournaments, which had resumed a month ago, are now suspended.

A situation that could have consequences for the next Copa América, which Argentina is co-organizing with Colombia. A week ago, Argentine President Alberto Fernández publicly expressed doubts about the possibility of keeping it as it is. According to Sports Blog, radio show Blue Radio, the Argentinian government is currently in contact with its Colombian counterpart to leave it the entire organization of the competition.

A Colombia which, according to its president Iván Duque is always ready to host the continental event next June even if it has somewhat buried CONMEBOL’s crazy dreams of seeing the competition welcome the public (the continental body having set a limit to 30% of stadium capacity). The government has in fact prohibited access to the stadiums to supporters in Barranquilla, Medellín, Cali and Bogotá, the host cities of the event. The rumor of a defection of Argentina is progressing all the same, it is now said that Ibagué, Pereira, Manizales and Armenia could be designated host cities so that the entire competition is held on Colombian territory. As a reminder, the edition initially scheduled for 2020 in order to fix the Copa America on the EURO calendar must be held from June 11 to July 10. Meanwhile, on April 22, 430 people died from COVID-19 in Colombia, another sad record.
